Visit ancient Roman ruins, Matera's UNESCO-recognised caves, and Alberobello’s Trulli houses on this stunning tour. Discover what you’ll experience: DAY 1 - UK TO MONOPOLI: Depart the UK on your flight to Bari. Transfer to Monopoli. DAY 2 - LECCE & OTRANTO: Explore Lecce, Puglia’s historic trading centre. Baroque buildings, ornate churches, and marbled courtyards reflect the town’s historic importance. Wander the old town, built around the remnants of a Roman amphitheatre, then spend time in Otranto, built on the site of the ancient Greek town of Hydrus. DAY 3 - MATERA & ALTAMURA: Visit UNESCOlisted Matera, the Mediterranean’s most well-preserved example of ancient troglodyte settlements. Reached through a network of alleys and stairways, some have stone-fronted formal entrances, and many are renovated for modern use - all are overseen by a 13th-century cathedral, built at the highest point of the city. Travel to the plateau town of Altamura to see its Romanesque cathedral and historic centre, a maze of narrow streets and intimate courtyards. Sample the famous local bread, originated by local peasants. DAY 4 - MONOPOLI: Enjoy a day at leisure or take an optional excursion to the caves at Castellana, Monopoli’s white-washed houses, and the striking cliff-side town of Polignano a Mare. DAY 5 - ALBEROBELLO, LOCOROTONDO & MARTINA FRANCA: Travel to Alberobello, home to more than 1,500 unique Trulli houses – distinctive white-washed cylindrical buildings with conical grey roofs, dating back to the 14thcentury. In Locorotondo, look out for more Trulli houses dotted across the picturesque countryside. Continue to Martina Franca, where Moorish influences are apparent in the town’s medieval palaces and churches; the beautiful Ducal Palace is well worth a visit. Explore at your own pace. DAY 6 - TRANI & CASTEL DEL MONTE: Visit Trani, a whitewashed port city, before lunch in a typical agriturismo overlooking Castel del Monte. Continue to the fortress itself, built by Roman Emperor Frederick II; this octagonal citadel is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. DAY 7 - MONOPOLI: Spend the day at leisure. An optional excursion to Bari, Puglia’s capital, allows you to explore the town’s old quarter.
