144 M A L D I V E S Coral Reef Atoll The Maldives consists of two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls. These structures are formed upon a sharp ridge rising from the ocean, making way for breathtaking beaches and crystal clear waters. North Malé Atoll North Malé Atoll is the principal atoll of the Maldives and includes Malé, the island’s capital. There are 50 islands in the North Malé Atoll, many of which are uninhabited. South Malé Atoll Located to the west of Malé, South Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the Maldives for underwater sports – the diving here is renowned. You can also learn about the Maldivian way of life at the cultural centre. Kaafu Atoll Located above the North Malé Atoll offering visitors stunning white sands and crystal clear waters. Meemu Atoll Meemu Atoll is often referred to as the Maldives’ best-kept secret. It is made up of 33 islands just 9 of which are inhabited. Raa Atoll The perfect place to spend sun drenched days on unspoilt sands. The scuba diving is outstanding and the beach is pure white sand.
