WHAT’S INCLUDED Sri Lanka is a historic and cultural storehouse set against a backdrop of stunning beauty. This tour gives a fascinating insight into the wonders that exist in Sri Lanka today - the ancient cities and temples of past civilisations, the fascinating highlands where world famous Ceylon tea is grown, the lakeside city of Kandy, the last stronghold of the Sri Lankan kings, and an orphanage where baby elephants are lovingly reared and trained. DAY 1: UK to Sigiriya You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel where the remainder of the day can be spent at your own leisure. DAY 2: Anuradhapura After breakfast visit Sri Lanka’s first capital, Anuradhapura, dating from the 4 th century BC. Afternoon is at leisure with optional bird watching/nature ramble (payable locally). DAY 3: Polonnaruwa After breakfast proceed to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11 th & 12 th centuries AD. See the ruins of the Royal Palace and visit the Gal Vihare with its splendid carved Buddha statues. DAY 4: Sigiriya Early morning exploration of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO site dating back to the 5 th century AD. In the afternoon visit Dambulla Rock Temple and its impressive painted caves. DAY 5: Kandy After breakfast, proceed to Matale to visit the Spice Garden and marvel at the batik paintings. In the afternoon tour the city of Kandy. DAY 6: Pinnawala In the morning, visit the Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, before continuing to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, to see elephants being fed, bathed and trained. In the evening head back to Kandy and visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic. DAY 7: Nuwara Eliya After breakfast proceed to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka’s leading hill resort and centre of the country’s tea production. DAY 8: Colombo to beach stay After an early breakfast proceed to Kitulgala, witnessing some waterfalls en route, then continue to Colombo for a city tour before transferring to your beach hotel or your next flight.
