64 Albufeira, Algarve In the centre of the Algarve is Albufeira, the region’s best known resort. This former fishing village, with its attractive beach, has developed into a mecca for holidaymakers. The Old Town still retains the essence of the village it once was. Olhos d’Agua, Algarve Away from the hustle and bustle of Albufeira is Olhos d’Agua. With it’s palm-fringed promenade and pleasant beach, this resort offers a quieter stay. Carvoeiro, Algarve This pretty old fishing village, has retained its charming roots, and the sandstone cliffs provide the backdrop to Praia do Carvoeiro beach. Portimão, Algarve The busy town Portimão is best known for its famous beach Praia da Rocha. It is formed by a series of sandy coves broken by rocks of red and ochre. Vilamoura, Algarve Between Albufeira and Faro lies Vilamoura, a well developed resort of hotels boasting golf courses, a marina and numerous facilities for fishing and shooting, making this resort one of the Algarve’s favourite destinations. Quarteira, Algarve The resort of Quarteira, just east of Vilamoura, has developed from a small fishing village into a fair sized holiday centre. The fishing catch is still laid out daily on the quayside of the harbour. Funchal, Madeira With hotels situated in the west and the Old Town in the east, linking the two is the commercial central area with its imposing cathedral, historic buildings and shops. The Lido area links Funchal with the pebbled Praia Formosa beach at the western end. Machico, Madeira Machico is a tranquil town that has a beach and a good selection of restaurants and boasts the oldest church the ‘Capela dos Milagres’.
